Discovering a Passion for Pharmacy: Madi's Journey to Dalhousie University

student story Apr 15, 2024

Becoming a pharmacist requires more than just dedication and hard work; it's about embracing a passion to impact lives positively. Madi Slack, a student in her second year of the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program at Dalhousie University, shares her journey into the dynamic world of pharmacy, highlighting pharmacists’ critical role in health care.

Raised in a health care-focused family—her mother was a nurse—Madi was drawn early to a career where she could make a substantial impact. Her pivotal moment came during a "bring your kid to work day" in grade nine, where she saw pharmacists collaborating directly with doctors and nurses, shaping patient care decisions.

“I got to see the doctors ask pharmacists, ‘What medication do you think this patient should be on?’ And it solidified for me that their role is vital to the health care system.”

Embarking on the PharmD Path

The path to becoming a pharmacist typically starts with a PharmD degree. Dalhousie University’s program starts in September 2024 and offers cutting-edge education and practical experience over four years. It emphasizes problem-based learning, extensive clinical rotations, and innovative skills lab courses. Madi appreciates the supportive environment and small class sizes, "You see everyone, every single day. You’re with them in every class, and you grow together," she explains. This setting fosters a collaborative atmosphere where students help each other succeed.

Supporting Future Pharmacists

Madi finds joy in linking her academic knowledge directly to patient care, helping patients manage their health better under her guidance. The accessibility and trust pharmacists establish with their patients make them one of the most approachable health care professionals in the community.

The pharmacy profession is dynamic, consistently broadening its scope. "We're always adding more to the table, and the scope's always widening," Madi notes with excitement about her future career.
